Be a Public Ally! Make an Impact, Grow as a Leader.

Public Allies seeks individuals who are as dynamic as the nation we live in. All Public Allies have a passion for social impact. Because Allies are deployed to serve alongside leading social entrepreneurs and cause leaders, Public Allies strives to identify individuals who can excel both as members of a team and individually. We are looking for emerging leaders with a commitment to our six core values of Diversity and Inclusion, Integrity, Focus on Assets, Collaboration, Continuous Learning, and Innovation. We want Allies to learn, grow, and lead in unique and challenging environments.

Our program is available to all, without regard to race, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, disability, political affiliation, marital or parental status, military service, community, or social affiliations. Anyone over 17 years of age with a high school diploma or GED, and who is a U.S. citizen or has permanent residency, is welcome to apply.

Full-time Public Allies are expected to commit to and complete an intensive, 10-month AmeriCorps program, requiring minimums of 1,700 hours of service. Part-time allies will complete 675 hours of service over a 10-month period and will have adjusted benefits. This service has three main components:

  • Apprenticeship: Allies are matched with a nonprofit organization or public agency in their community where they work 4 days each week to address critical social issues.
  • Leadership Development: Allies attend core-, midyear-, and final retreats, along with weekly training designed to teach a variety of personal and professional skills. Allies receive critical feedback, reflection, and personal coaching toward individual performance and professional goals.
  • Team Service Projects: Allies design, implement, and evaluate Team Service Projects in collaboration with a small group of Allies that use an asset based community development approach.

Full-time allies receive a total living stipend of $22,000 (taxable), access to health care, child care subsidy, monthly bus pass, and a monetary education award of $7,395 after completing the program to pay back student loans or pay for future education opportunities. Most AmeriCorps members are also eligible for forbearance or deferment of student loans.
